White Ash (Fraxinus americana)

Description:

Worldwide, there are approximately 60 species of ash, of which 16 come from North America. Eastern Canada is the principal habitat of four species, including White Ash. It can reach a height of 24 m (80 ft) with a straight trunk.

Ash sapwood is pale brown or creamy white, while the heartwood ranges from pale to dark brown. White Ash is paler in color than most commercial species, with a natural shine. Easily confused with butternut, ash can be distinguished by its grain, which resembles red oak.

White Ash is used in the manufacture of baseball bats and tool handles.

Hardness (Janka Hardness Test):

1,320 lb (2% harder than red oak.)

Color variation:

Moderate color variation becomes very pronounced on exposure to bright light. This can be slowed or reduced by applying UV protection at the finishing stage.

Marks on strips:

Marks, scratches, and imperfections are less noticeable due to the open grain and natural color of ash.

Sustainable Development

When forests become old or overcrowded, trees stop growing and begin to decay. They release carbon that contributes to the greenhouse effect. Therefore, responsible harvesting of our forests locks in the carbon and ensures a continual supply of growing, oxygen producing trees.
